What we know about you, and what we don't

Software Dictionary is built to be read without an account. Most of what it remembers stays in your own browser. What leaves it is an anonymous visit count without cookies and, only if you say yes, Google Analytics.

Last updated

  • Stays on your device

Your reading history, quiz scores and review schedule, saved pages, and your theme and language choices. They live in this browser's local storage and are never sent to us.

  • Counted without cookies

Every visit adds to an anonymous count: the page, the site you came from, the country, and the browser and device type. No cookies, and nothing that follows you from one day to the next.

  • Counted only with your OK

With your consent, Google Analytics records page views: the page address, the time, the country and city it guesses from your connection, your device and browser type, and the site you came from.

  • Never collected

Your name or an account (there are none), what you type into search, your reading progress, or anything you write in the contact form. Your email only if you sign up for the newsletter.

Anonymous visit count

Vercel, the service that hosts the site, counts visits for us with Vercel Web Analytics. It runs without asking because it can't recognise you: it sets no cookies, and visitors are told apart only by a hash of the request that is reset every day.

It records the page address (without its search part, so search words are never counted), the site you came from, your country, and your browser, operating system and device type. Your IP address isn't stored.

In the same anonymous way, Vercel Speed Insights measures how fast pages load and respond for readers (the Core Web Vitals), with the page address and the device type, so we can keep the site fast.

How Vercel Web Analytics handles privacy

Google Analytics

We use Google Analytics 4 to see how many people visit, which pages they read and where they come from, so we know which terms to write next. It runs only after you press Accept in the banner, and you can change your mind at any time below.

Google Analytics 4 does not log or store IP addresses. We turn off Google signals and ad personalization, and page addresses are sent without their search part, so search words never reach it. Google keeps the detailed data for at most 14 months.

Google processes this data as our service provider. You can read how in Google's privacy policy.

Weekly newsletter

If you sign up for the newsletter, your email address is stored by Kit, the service that sends it, in the list for the language you signed up in. It is used only to send the weekly email, and we never sell or share it.

You confirm your address by email before anything is sent, and every email has a link that unsubscribes you at once. To have your address deleted entirely, write to us through the contact page.

Your choices

Analytics on this browser: Not chosen yet

Turning it off stops Google Analytics at once and deletes its cookies from this site.

Pause or clear your reading history

Cookies and browser storage

The site sets no cookies of its own. Google Analytics sets two, only after you accept:

NamePurposeKept for
_gaTells one visitor's visits apart from another's, without knowing who they are.2 years
_ga_<ID>Remembers the current visit, so one visit is counted once.2 years

Everything else is in your browser's local storage, which only this site can read and which never leaves your device:

  • softwaredictionary:historyPages you opened and how far you read.
  • softwaredictionary:history-quiz…Quiz scores and the daily review schedule.
  • softwaredictionary:history-interviewThe interview questions you marked as known in practice mode.
  • softwaredictionary:theme / :langYour light/dark and language choices.
  • softwaredictionary:consentWhether you accepted or declined analytics.
  • softwaredictionary:newsletterWhether you signed up for the newsletter here or hid its short invitations, so those stop showing.
  • softwaredictionary:puzzleYour guesses in the daily puzzle, for your streak and stats.

Ads

When sponsored ads appear, they are plain text chosen for the page, not for you. They load no scripts and set no cookies.

Browser extension

The term linker extension keeps its settings (on or off, the sites you turned it off on, the language) in your browser's extension storage, which your browser may sync between your own devices. Once a day it downloads the term list from this site; that request says nothing about the pages you read, which never leave your browser.
